Melampy Sets Four-Set Kills Record as Mariners Split Saturday's Matches

STANDISH, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to Southern Maine 3-1 (25-17, 13-25, 26-24, 25-19) in their first match of the day but defeated the University of New England 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) in their final match on Saturday in non-conference action at Saint Joseph's College of Maine.

Southern Maine 3 – Maine Maritime 1 (25-17, 13-25, 26-24, 25-19)

How it Happened: The Huskies used a six-point run to close out an extremely competitive first set, but the Mariners fought back to take the second set in commanding fashion. The third set proved to be extremely back-and-forth, but Southern Maine edged the Mariners 26-24 and scored five-straight points to end the fourth set and secure the match win.

Inside the Numbers: Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Mariners with a Maine Maritime four-set single-match record of 31 kills, and also added 10 digs, Sydney Rich (Williamsburg, Va.) contributed a team-high 12 digs, while Katie Albritton (Hutto, Texas) led the team with 41 assists and also chipped in with and ace and 10 digs.

Brianna Dellolacono led the Huskies with nine kills, Tori McMahon tallied a game-high 13 digs and Sophie Lindsay added a team-best 18 assists for Southern Maine.

Maine Maritime 3 – University of New England 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19)

How it Happened: The Mariners took a comfortable 18-10 lead in the first set and never looked back, capturing the set 25-18. In similar fashion the Mariners took a 19-10 lead in the second set and used back-to-back kills from Hunnie Zuber (Lubbock, Texas) and Avia Hathorn (Clinton, Miss.) to close out the set with a 25-19 win. UNE came out strong in the third set, taking a 5-0 lead, but the Mariners scored five-unanswered points to claim the 25-19 set win and the match victory.

Inside the Numbers: Melampy led the Mariners once again with 15 digs and 14 kills, while also adding three blocks and an assist. Zuber tallied 13 kills, to go with a dig and a block and Albritton led the team with 33 assists, while adding four digs, three kills, two blocks and an ace.

Lauren Davenport led the Nor'easters with 10 kills, Paige Weatherbee tallied a team-high 11 digs and Addie Miller led the way with 23 assists for UNE.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 2-1 overall on the year, and will return to action next Friday, September 10 when they travel to Colby to take on both Gordon College and the Mules beginning at 6:00 pm.
