Mariners Fall to Fighting Tigers in Close Game

Cobleskill, N.Y. – Maine Maritime men's basketball fell to SUNY Cobleskill, 93-90 Sunday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.

How it Happened: In the first five minutes, both teams traded baskets until SUNY Cobleskill created some separation from the Mariners with a 9-2 run to make the score 16-10. Maine Maritime answered with a layup by Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) and three pointer by Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) to cut the lead down to one. After more back-and-forth action, the Fighting Tigers continued to hold their advantage over the Mariners going into the half with a 46-39 point lead.

After a slow first ten minutes of the second half, the Mariners started to cut down the Fighting Tiger's 17 point lead. Markus Ramirez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) hit two jumpers and a three, while Malachi Reincke (Houston, Texas) cashed in on two layups and a foul shot to get the Mariners within eight points. Rubin then added eight straight points to cut the lead to two and Ramirez hit another jumper to tie the game 90-90 with 00:46 seconds on the clock. SUNY Cobleskill hit a layup and foul shot at the end to take the 93-90 win.

Inside the Numbers: Ramirez led all scorers with 29 points, in addition to five rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Reincke came off the bench scoring 19 points, six rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Rubin added 17 points and four rebounds. Heinz tallied his fourth double-double of the year with 16 points and 15 rebounds, along with three assists, two blocks, and one steal.

The Mariners shot 43.8% from the hardwood and 26.5% from beyond the arc, while SUNY Cobleskill shot 48.6% from the floor and 30.4% from three point land.

Up Next: Maine Maritime falls to 2-10 overall and 1-3 in conference, while the Fighting Tigers improve to 2-11 overall and 1-3 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Friday, January 14 at 5:30pm when they host SUNY Canton in a conference matchup.
