Strong First Half Leads Mariners to Victory

AUGUSTA, Maine – Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) led the Mariners to a 73-61 victory over UMaine-Augusta in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening. The sophomore post player recorded a double-double with game-highs 23 rebounds and 20 points, along with four assists, one block, and a steal.
 
How it Happened: After the Moose scored the first points of the night, Malachi Reincke (Houston, Texas) found Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) for a three to take the lead and the Mariners never looked back. As the first half continued, the Mariners kept building their lead, led by Heinz who tallied 14 points and Rubin who recorded all of his nine points of the evening. Maine Maritime ended the half with a comfortable 22 point lead.
 
The Mariners continued to build their lead in the second half, going up by 28 points at one point in the game. UMaine-Augusta kept clawing closer to the Mariners' lead, but could never get close enough. The Mariners left the night with a victory and a score of 73-61.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Heinz recorded a double-double with game-highs 23 rebounds and 20 points, along with  four assists, one block, and a steal.
  • Josiah Dancy (Orlando, Fla.) and Reincke both added 15 points to the mix, while Rubin contributed nine,
  • Maurice Hodge Jr. tallied 18 points, while Elijah Smith recorded 16 points for the Moose.
  • Maine Maritime shot 38% from the floor and 32% from three point land, while the Moose shot 33% from the hardwood and 11% from beyond the arc.
     
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 4-3 overall, while UMaine-Augusta falls to 6-7 on the year. Maine Maritime returns to action to wrap up the first semester with a conference matchup against UMaine-Farmington on Saturday, December 10 at 3:00pm.
