Mariners Sail Past Husson and Earn Hosting Rights For NAC East Division Tournament

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball beat Husson University, 68-58 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened: After three long minutes of no scoring for either team, Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) hit two foul shots to spark a 8-0 run for the Mariners. The Mariners ended up with 13 points that quarter and held Husson to five. Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) started off the second quarter with a three and Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) hit a jumper to give the Mariners a 18-5 point lead. The Eagles answered with a 7-2 to make the score 20-12 with 3:09 left in the half. The half ended with Makenzie Monzon (Orlando, Fla.) hitting a three from the corner to make the score 27-18 in favor of the Mariners going into the half.

Cook started off the second half with another three, extending the Mariner lead to 12 points. The Eagles went on a 10-5 run to make the score 35-28 with five minutes left in the third quarter. The Mariners answered with an 8-2 run and Monzon finished off the quarter with two straight buckets to make the score 47-32 going into the fourth quarter. Husson started off the fourth with a 15-5 run over the Mariners to make the score 54-47 with 5:34 left in the game. The rest of the quarter, the Mariners and Eagles traded buckets but the Mariners kept their advantage, claiming a 68-58 victory over the Eagles.

Inside the Numbers: Moore led the Mariners with 20 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. Barela added 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Cook and Monzon both chipped in 11 points for the Mariners.

Bailey Donovan led the Eagles with 24 points, 19 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and one steal. Megan Peach added 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The Mariners shot 43.1% from the hardwood and 43.5% from beyond the arc, while the Eagles shot 32.3% from the floor and 21.1% from the three point line.

Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 19-3 overall and 12-1 in conference, while Husson University falls to 16-5 overall and 11-1 in conference. The Mariners return to action when they host the NAC East Division Tournament on Friday, February 18 and Saturday, February 19. Maine Maritime will face the winner between UMaine-Farmington and NVU-Lyndon who play on Tuesday, February 15.
