Mariners Secure Home Court Advantage in First Round of NAC Tournament

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's basketball fell to Husson University, 58-54 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened: The first half of the game had competitive back-and-forth action between both teams. Husson started to pull away from the Mariners when they hit three three-pointers in a row to take a ten point lead. After some more back-and-forth action, Husson went on another run to make the score 33-18 with 2:32 left in the first half. Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) splashed a three and Malachi Reincke (Houston, Texas) hit a layup to take the Mariners into halftime with a score of 33-23 in favor of the Eagles.

After eight minutes of similar action as the first half, the Mariners went on a 9-2 run, sparked by Heinz to cut the lead to seven. After the Eagles extended the lead to ten again, Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo.) nailed a three to spark a nine point run for the Mariners, making the score 52-51 with 3:34 left on the clock. The Eagles then scored six straight points to secure the 58-54 win.

Inside the Numbers: Cameron Gerlach (Hendersonville, Tenn.), Rubin, and Reincke all had 12 points for the Mariners. Heinz recorded a double-double with a game-high 25 rebounds and 11 points, along with nine blocks, three assists, and three steals.

DJ Bussey had 12 points, two assists, two steals, and one rebound for the Eagles, while J Thomas came off the bench with ten points, one rebound, and one assist.

The Mariners shot 37.7% from the floor and 36.4% from beyond the arc, while the Eagles shot 37.5% from the hardwood and 35.3% from beyond the arc.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 4-15 overall and 2-8 in conference, while Husson improves to 12-9 overall and 9-3 in conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, February 15 when they host NVU-Lyndon in the first-round of the NAC tournament. The time of the game is TBA.
