Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball beat NVU-Lyndon, 72-47 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinal matchup Friday evening.
How it Happened: The Mariners and Hornets traded buckets the entire first quarter with no team taking more than a three point lead. Crista Link (Huntingtown, Md.) hit a layup at the end of the quarter to make the score 11-9 in favor of the Mariners. Maine Maritime started off the quarter strong with a 9-2 run sparked by Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) who hit a three point shot. The Hornets answered with two quick buckets but then the Mariners went on another 12-2 run sparked by a three made by Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) to give the Mariners a 32-18 lead. The Mariners continued to hold their advantage and went into the half with an eight point lead.
The Mariners started off the second half with a 12-2 run sparked by Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine). The two teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, with the Mariners taking a 55-38 lead. Maine Maritime had a big fourth quarter, scoring 17 points and only allowing the Hornets to score nine points to claim a 72-47 win.
Inside the Numbers: Plissey led the Mariners with 14 points, eight rebounds, five blocks, and three assists. Moore tallied a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, along with five assists, and four steals. Kali Barber (Tampa, Fla.) came off the bench with nine points, four rebounds and four assists and Makenzie Monzon (Orlando, Fla.) recorded seven rebounds, four assists, which breaks the Maine Maritime record for assists in a season, two points, and one steal.
Sage Smith led the Hornets with 14 points, eight rebounds, and one steal. Faith Poirier came off the bench with ten points and two rebounds, while Lea Crompton had eight points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
