Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball beat UMaine-Augusta 76-46 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.
How it Happened: After the two teams traded baskets, Sydney Hodgdon (Hampden, Maine) hit a layup to spark a nine point run for the Mariners, making the score 18-13 with a minute left in the first quarter. The Moose ended the quarter with a made jump shot, making the score 18-15 in favor of the Mariners going into the second. Makenzie Monzon (Orlando, Fla.) made a nice move to the rim for a layup to start off the scoring in the second quarter and sparked a 7-2 run for the Mariners to make the score 25-17. The Mariners kept their foot on the gas pedal in the quarter, making the score 39-25 going into the half.
The Moose came out strong in the second half with a couple made baskets before Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) splashed a three-point shot to start a 10 point run for the Mariners. The quarter ended with Maine Maritime up by 20 points. In the fourth quarter the Mariners continued to hold their advantage over the Moose, claiming a 76-46 win.
Inside the Numbers: Barela led the Mariners with 16 points, shooting 50% from the floor and beyond the arc, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Kali Barber (Tampa, Fla.) came off the bench with 12 points, two assists, and one rebound. Both Lauren Cook (Charlotte, Maine) and Crista Link (Huntingtown, Md.) each added 11 points to the mix.
Sydney Farrar had 15 points, three rebounds, and one steal for the Moose. Kaeti Butterfield added 10 points, four rebounds, and two blocks, while Taznejia Valencia chipped in nine points, five rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
The Mariners shot 43.9% from the floor and 36.4% from the three point line, while the Moose shot 21.3% from the floor and 18.5% from beyond the arc.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 18-3 overall, while the Moose fall to 14-6 overall. The Mariners return to action on Saturday, February 12 when they host Husson University at 3:00pm for senior day.
