Mariners Defeat Moose

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's basketball beat UMaine-Augusta 76-65 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

How it Happened: The first seven minutes of the game had extremely competitive, back-and-forth action between the two teams. The Mariners started to separate from the Moose when Malachi Reincke (Houston, Texas) and Carter Rubin (Littleton, Colo) both hit two threes each to spark a 12-4 run to make the score 22-14 with 9:07 left in the first half. The Moose answered with 17 straight points to take a ten point lead over the Mariners. Cameron Gerlach (Hendersonville, Tenn.) hit two layups to end the half and bring the score to 37-31 in favor of the Moose.

After a couple traded baskets to start the second half, Rubin splashed another three pointer to make the score 40-40 with 17:20 left on the clock. The Mariners then exploded on a 15-2 run to make the score 55-42. The Moose answered with a couple baskets before Maine Maritime went on another run, taking an 18 point lead with 5:55 remaining in the game. The Moose tried to cut into the Mariners lead, but Maine Maritime held their advantage through the rest of the game, claiming a 76-65 point victory.

Inside the Numbers: The Mariners were led by Rubin, who had 26 points, hitting seven threes, eight rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Reincke tallied 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and one steal, while Gerlach added 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 19 rebounds, along with four blocks, two assists, and one steal.

Elijah Smith led the Moose with 24 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Maurice Hodge Jr. had eight points, four rebounds, and one assist, while Eric Crawford added eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

The Mariners shot 41.5% from the floor and 37.5% from the three point line, while the Moose shot 39.4% from the hardwood and 31.8% from beyond the arc.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 4-14 overall, while the Moose fall to 5-19 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, February 12 when they host Husson University for senior day.
