Gecoya Scores Hat Trick in Win Over Hornets

CASTINE, Maine – Dominick Gecoya (Middleton, Mass.) scores a hat trick to lead the Mariners to a 9-0 victory over NVU-Lyndon, to pick up their first conference win on Homecoming weekend.
 
How it Happened: Maine Maritime dominated the game from the beginning when John-John Dickenson (Advance, N.C) stripped a defender for a goal in the first 45 seconds of regulation. Three more Mariners, Ryan Smith (Coronado, Calif.), Gecoya, and Xander Fortuna-Ramos (West Covina, Calif.) each scored a goal in the first to extend the Mariners lead to 4-0 going into the half. The Mariners scored five more goals in the second to top off their Homecoming victory against the Hornets.
                                    
Inside the Numbers:
  • Gecoya tallied three goals and one assist for the Mariners.
  • Fortuna-Ramos and Smith each scored two goals.
  • Dickenson and Pieter Oudejans (Rockledge, Fla.) each scored one goal.
  • The Mariners held a 33-4 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks over the Hornets.
  • Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) tallied one save in the first half for the win, while Maxwell Tomlin (Monroe, Maine) went untested in the second half for the Mariners.
  • Brett Roy recorded 14 saves in net for the Hornets.
 
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Hornets fall to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in conference. The Mariners return to action on Monday, September 19 at 4:00pm when they take on Bowdoin College in a non-conference matchup.
