Vandemergel and Harrison Lead Mariners to Shutout over Wildcats

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer claimed a 2-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) shutout victory over Cazenovia College on Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.

How it Happened: After a scoreless 33 minutes, JD Vandemergel (Brighton, Mich.) put the Mariners on the board with his first goal of the season, and the eventual game-winner. The Mariners held a 1-0 lead through halftime and late into the second half, when Reuben Harrison (Heidelberg, Germany) added an insurance goal in the 89th minute, to help seal a 2-0 win.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The Mariners outshot the Wildcats 12-9 and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) made seven saves in net for the Mariners to earn the shutout win, while Hayden McBath made three saves for the Wildcats.
  • Harrison led the Mariners with four shots on the afternoon.
  • Maine Maritime has outscored their conference opponents 12-2 in their first three conference games.

Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in NAC play, while Cazenovia falls to 1-3-1 overall and 1-2 in conference. The Mariners return to action when they host SUNY Poly on Sunday, September 25 at 1pm on Ritchie Field.
