Mariners Clinch #1 Seed After Defeating Owls

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball clinch the #1 seed in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division with a 65-58 victory over UMaine-Presque Isle on Monday evening.
 
How it Happened: The first quarter was tightly played by both teams. The Mariners got off to an 8-0 start, before the Owls quickly caught back up, knotting the game at 11 at the end of the first quarter. The Mariners were able to create some separation in the second quarter, outscoring the Owls 25-18 to take a seven point lead going into the half.
 
The Owls came out strong in the second half, tying the game up at 41 with four minutes left in the third quarter. The Mariners were able to sneak by with a one point lead going into the fourth. Maine Maritime won the fourth quarter, taking a 65-58 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) led the Mariners with 22 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
  • Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Grace Huntwork (Gretna, Neb.) each added 12 points to the mix.
  • Lauren Plissey (Hermon) chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, along with four blocks and two assists.
  • Emily Wheaton led all scorers with an impressive 30 points, while Alexis Ireland added 11 points for the Owls.
  • Maine Maritime shot 38.5% from the floor and 25.6% from the three point line, while the Owls shot 34.4% from the hardwood and 22.2% from three point land.
 
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 19-6 overall and 13-1 in conference, while UMaine-Presque Isle falls to 14-10 on the year and 8-6 in conference. The Mariners return to action this weekend as they host the NAC East Division tournament. They will take on the Hornets of NVU-Lyndon on Friday, February 17 at 5:30pm.
