Box Score BOSTON--The Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball team saw its season-best four-match winning streak come to an end on Friday evening at the hands of host Wentworth in non-conference action at Tansey Gymnasium. The Leopards defeated the Mariners 20-25, 25-10, 25-21, 25-19 to improve to 12-8 on the season; the Mariners drop to 7-8 overall.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Sophomore Sydney Williams led the team with a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs.
- Freshman Hannah Tate, who is the reigning North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week, had a match-high 18 digs.
- Senior Katie Albritton posted 24 assists and two service aces.
- Junior Ila Smith posted eight terminations while hitting .353.
- Sophomore Ally Hadley had seven kills on a .357 attack percentage, 15 assists and six digs.
Wentworth Highlights
- Kate McLane (.310) and Emma Sanders (.333) led a strong offense that attacked at a .350 clip with 18 and 16 kills, respectively.
- Gianna Cefalu had a double-double with a match-best 43 assists and 11 digs.
- Amanda Zweifler served up five of the Leopards' 10 aces and she led the team with 12 digs.
First Set
- MMA outhit Wentworth .219 to .111 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
- The teams played evenly to start until the Mariners built a four-point lead at 12-8. Williams keyed a 5-1 run with a pair of kills.
- The Leopards scored five unanswered points to take their first lead at 13-12, sparked by two Zweifler aces.
- Wentworth took its last lead at 17-16 on a MMA service error before the Mariners exerted control by going on an 8-4 run to end the opening frame. Hadley broke a 17-all tie with a kill and ended the set with an ace.
Second Set
- Wentworth tied the match up 1-1 as the Mariners couldn't get in rhythm offensively.
- The Leopards hit .750 with 12 kills against no attack errors in 16 swings, while the Mariners were minus-.100.
- Wentworth spotted MMA a 1-0 lead before reeling off seven straight points to go up 7-1 as it never trailed after that.
Third Set
- Both offenses played nearly identical by hitting .250 apiece but it was Wentworth that was able to take the frame by four points to go up 2-1 in the match.
- The Leopards took the lead for good at 5-4 and eventually built as much as a 23-14 advantage before the Mariners tried to mount a huge comeback.
- Williams had three kills to fuel Maine Maritime's 7-1 run that closed the deficit to 24-21.
Fourth Set
- MMA hit a respectable .289 but Wentworth posted another frame with zero errors en route to a .531 attack percentage to win by six points.
- The Leopards led wire-to-wire in the decisive frame, but the Mariners made things interesting.
- Wentworth held leads of 4-1, 12-6 and 19-12 before MMA clawed its way back to 22-18.
Beyond the Boxscore
- The teams are meeting for just the second time since Sep. 13, 2014, when Wentworth won 3-0 on a neutral floor at Lasell College.
- Wentworth competes in the Conference of New England.
- The Mariners had held opponents to .032, minus-.123, .068 and minus-.020 hitting in their four previous outings.
