Football Scores Season-High Points in Loss at Newport News Apprentice School

The Mariners roll up 23 first downs and 387 total yards in 72-26 defeat

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--Senior quarterback Dylan Abbott threw for 256 yards and four touchdowns, and freshman Auston Harris rushed for a career-high 141 yards, but it wasn't enough as the Maine Maritime Academy football team lost at the Apprentice School, 72-26, at Builder Field on Saturday. The Mariners drop to 0-3 on the season, while the Builders improve to 3-3 overall.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Abbott went 19 for 39 and his favorite receiver was sophomore Kaden Cadorette who had career bests of five receptions and 100 yards.
  • Freshman Thomas Jackson had a game-best eight catches for 67 yards.
  • Freshman Matt Gagin and sophomore Gerald Coleman both had two tackles among four total each. The latter added two quarterback hurries.
  • Freshman Lucas Houghton had two interceptions for 30 yards and three total tackles.
Apprentice Highlights
  • Eduardo Rios also had four TD passes and he threw for 338 yards.
  • His favorite receiver was Jasiah Beacham who had a game-high 150 yards on six catches.
  • Ty Taylor rushed eight times for a game-high 158 yards and three TDs.
  • Kasim Drumgole (9 solo) and Chase Gayness (2) led the defense with 14 and 10 stops, respectively.
First Quarter
  • Apprentice outscored MMA 35-12 while never trailing in the contest.
  • Alkendric Overt returned the opening kickoff for an 82-yard TD return to give the home team a quick 7-0 lead.
  • After the MMA defense came up with a three-and-out on the Builders' first offensive possession, the Mariners closed the gap to 7-6 with 9 minutes and 26 seconds left. Jackson caught a 26-yard TD pass from Abbott that capped a 7-play, 56-yard drive in 4:00.
  • But Apprentice scored on its next possession with a Taylor 34-yard TD run to ignite a 21-0 scoring run to make it 28-6.
  • The final 1:55 saw the teams combine for three receiving TDs: Taylor for 26 yards, Cadorette for 68 yards at 1:28 and T.K. Petty for 46 at 37 seconds.
Second Quarter
  • With the score 49-12 at the 1:52 mark, Maine Maritime got on the scoreboard again as Abbott and Harris connected for a 6-yard TD passing play. That completed a long scoring drive of 12 plays and 79 yards in 4:12.
  • Apprentice led 52-20 at halftime.
Third Quarter
  • The Builders had the only TD in the frame with a Benny Nena 46-yard interception return.
Fourth Quarter
  • The Mariners scored their final TD with Abbott and Harris connecting again, this time for 15 yards with 3:31 remaining.
Beyond the Boxscore
  • The Builders scored 14 points on two turnovers.
  • Harris' previous career-best rushing mark was 86 yards set at Nichols on Sep. 14.
  • This was the first meeting between the two schools; Apprentice is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
  • Abbott's four TD passes were one shy of Eric Spaulding's single-game school record; five versus Westfield State in 1991.

  • Maine Maritime will host the Husson junior varsity team at Ritchie Field on Sunday, Oct. 20. The exhibition game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
