Jack Banks led Maine Maritime Academy with 20 and 19 points, respectively, but Mitchell College led buzzer-to-buzzer in an 82-75 men's basketball win during a battle of Mariners for the 2024 Beaudry Classic championship hosted by the University of New England at Harold Alfond Forum on Sunday. Maine Maritime drops to 3-1 on the season while Mitchell remains unbeaten at 3-0.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Ramirez made 8-of-15 field goals, including 4-for-9 from three-point range, and led the Mariners with three assists.
- Banks converted seven of 11 field goal attempts and recorded three rebounds.
- Senior co-captain Curt Heinz (11 points) led the team with seven rebounds.
Mitchell Highlights
- Jaylyn Clardy scored a game-high 30 points on 12-for-17 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-best nine rebounds.
- Eddie Volkerts, Brandon Lee and Wilton Causey added 16, 12 and 10 points, respectively.
- Volkerts added eight rebounds and five assists, while Lee had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
How it Happened
- Mitchell never trailed on the afternoon and outscored MMA 18-7 on second-chance points by pulling down 14 offensive rebounds (37-32 overall).
- Maine Maritime trailed by 13 points, 62-49, with 11 minutes and 47 seconds on the second-half clock, but went on a 23-15 scoring run to pull to 77-72 with 39 seconds remaining. Ramierz had seven points and Banks six during the comeback bid that fell just short.
- Both teams made around 50 percent of their field goals, but struggled at the free throw line: MMA, 61.1% (11-18) and MC, 62.5% (10-16).
- Mitchell held a 37-29 advantage at halftime.
Inside the Boxscore
- Maine Maritime has its best four-game start since the 2002-03 squad went 4-0.
- Mitchell leads the all-time series 2-0 as the teams were meeting for the first time since Nov. 16, 2014 (also in Biddeford).
