DELHI, N.Y.--Buoyed by three top-10 individual finishers, the Maine Maritime Academy men's cross country team was the runners-up in the 2024 North Atlantic Conference Championships conducted at the SUNY Delhi Golf Course on Saturday.
Maine Maritime scored 60 points to edge host SUNY-Delhi (81 points) and trailed only champion UMaine-Farmington (27). The Mariners' second-place finish matches their best since the second of back-to-back showings 2018 and 2019, and the highest under second-year head coach
Bryan Wolf who has been with the program for eight years.
Leading MMA to its third top-two team placement this fall, three-time NAC Runner of the Week senior
Ponce Saltysiak was second overall out of 74 individual entries with a clocking of 26 minutes and 53 seconds on the 8-kilometer course.
William Spaulding proved why he was named the conference rookie of the week a NAC-best five times this season by crossing the finish line this afternoon as the top freshman with a 27:02 time. Junior
Cooper Parlee came in ninth place in 27:21. That
trio made the all-conference teams.
The Beavers also had the individual winner in Justin Castaldo in 26:02.
Sophomores
Logan Serpico (30:24, 22nd) and
Joey Valliere (31:03, 26th) also contributed to MMA's team score. In addition, freshman
Caden Dussault (31:46, 32nd)) and senior
Shail Leszkowicz (32:33, 34th) also scored points.
Both
Saltysiak (3rd, 27:47.4), Serpico (40th, 32:24.8) and
Leszkowicz (57th, 34:01.6) all improved on their performances from the 2023 NAC championships.

On the women's side, MMA didn't field a full team to score in the team standings. The Mariners, however, had three individuals who competed led by sophomore
Sophie Sabet who led the way in 34th with a 6k time of 29:37. Junior
Kylie Cantlon was 44th in 32:16, but she shaved off over 90 seconds from her time as a sophomore, and classmate
Lillian Verrill (52nd, 40:51.0) also improved by five spots and about 5 minutes to 47th and 35:25.
SUNY-Delhi swept the women's team (36 points) and medalist (Amanda Intrieri, 22:39) crowns.
