Curt Heinz recorded another double-double with game highs of 23 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball team to a 72-69 victory Saturday over Mary Baldwin University at Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena, capturing the 2024 Messiah University Springhill Suites Camp Hill Tip-Off Invitational title.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Heinz made nine of 15 field goal attempts and led all playmakers with five assists. He also had two blocked shots.
- Fellow classmate and co-captain Carter Rubin scored 20 points on four 3-pointers and he had seven rebounds.
- Junior Josiah Dancy scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Mary Baldwin Highlights
- Quentin Hart scored a team-high 19 points, followed by Zach Sloan with 17 and Benton Raymond had 10.
- DJ Via (7 points) led the team with six rebounds and he had two steals.
How it Happened
- The Mariners dominated the glass with 47 rebounds while holding the Fighting Squirrels to 29.
- MBU stayed in the game by making the most of their 13 offensive rebounds, which produced 19 second-chance points.
- The Fighting Squirrels also scored 17 points off 17 MMA turnovers.
- Maine Maritime ruled the paint, outscoring the opponent 36-24.
- The Mariners built as much as a 12-point lead (24-12) midway through the first half as Rubin led the charge with 14 points.
- Mary Baldwin managed to get back into the contest by closing the half on a 27-16 run to trail 40-39 at the intermission.
- The score remained close in the early minutes of the second half as MBU took its last lead at 47-45 on a Hart 3ball at the 14:46 mark.
- Heinz fueled a 15-3 run over a span of 6 minutes and 29 seconds and MMA took a commanding 60-50 cushion with 8:17 remaining.
- The Fighting Squirrels, however, eventually tied the score at 66-all on a Sloan trey with 64 seconds left in the game.
- Senior Markus Ramirez (5 points) made a three-pointer of his own on MMA's next possession to seal the win.
- MBU still had a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime, but Ramirez blocked Jaden Ignacio's three-point field goal attempt with a tick left and Carter secured the defensive rebound.
