Sydney Rich and
Chloe Weeks reached 1,000 digs and 500 kills in their respective careers, and Maine Maritime Academy hit .337 as a team, as the top-seeded Mariners swept No. 4 UMaine-Presque Isle 25-10, 25-13, 25-9 in the North Atlantic Conference East Division Women's Volleyball Quarterfinals on Saturday at Smith Gymnasium.
Host Maine Maritime improves to 16-10 and advances to the NAC-East Semifinals against No. 3 Husson University (9-15 overall)--which upset second-seeded No. 2 Thomas College in today's other NAC-East quarterfinal 25-15, 25-20, 26-24--on Sunday at noon. UMPI sees its season end at 9-16.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Weeks (.667) finished with a match-high eight kills to bring her to 503 for her career, and she added six total blocks for a season's best.
- Rich made five digs to end up with 1,002 digs.
- Senior setter Katie Albritton led all student-athletes with 16 assists to go along with three kills (.333), two service aces, two blocks and four digs.
- Sophomores Sydney Williams (.385) and Ally Hadley (.273) added six kills apiece, with the former making four blocks and the latter recorded nine assists and six digs.
- Sophomore Breanna Kerr led all student-athletes with a career-best eight digs and classmate Amber Cooklin had seven.
- The defense held the Owls to a minus-.089 attack percentage.
UMPI Highlights
- Faith Graham led the team with five kills.
- Rylie Kolkow contributed 12 assists and a match-high-tying eight digs.
First Set
- The Mariners got off to a fast start to the tune of 13-2 and never looked back in winning the opening frame by 15 points.
- Maine Maritime hit .308 and held UMPI to a minus-.038 percentage.
Second Set
- The Mariners outhit the Owls .310 to minus-.091.
- Tied 2-2, MMA scored five unanswered points to go up 7-2 and the Mariners would never let go of the lead.
Third Set
- Maine Maritime used a 9-0 scoring run to break a 3-3 tie to set the tone in the decisive final stanza.
- The Mariners had their strongest frame offensively with a .393 attack percentage and held UMPI to minus-.129.
Beyond the Boxscore
- Maine Maritime is seeking its 11th NAC Championship, with the last occurring in 2022.
- MMA is now 14-5 in three-set matches and 8-1 at home.
