WATERVILLE, Maine – Metin Yavuz scored 25 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead Thomas College to an 82-67 win over Maine Maritime Saturday afternoon. The win moved Thomas to 9-15 (6-7 NAC East) and dropped the Mariners to 9-14 (5-8 NAC East) with a Monday matchup looming between the teams for the fourth and final North Atlantic Conference East Division playoff spot.
The Terriers led from start-to-finish with Metin building a 9-0 lead on his own over the game's first 2:06. Maine Maritime chipped away to get it within two points three-quarters of the way through the first half, but the Terriers answered with a 9-5 run over the last five minutes of the half to carry a 53-27 lead into the break. Thomas went ahead 10, 40-30, with 16:10 remaining in the contest. Maine Maritime never cut the lead down to single digits the remainder of the way.
Thomas had four players finish in double digits with Cooper Wirkala offering 11 points and five rebounds. Parker Desjardins and Jackson Reulke scored 10 apiece. Desjardins grabbed six boards. James Phelan had a game-high-five assists.
Curt Heinz and
Josiah Dancy led the Maine Maritime offense with 16 points each.
Jack Banks dumped in 15. Heinz recorded 12 rebounds to lock up his 18
th double-double on the campaign. He recorded a team-high four assists and blocked a pair of shots. Dancy grabbed six rebounds for the Mariners. Marcus Gibson came off the bench to secure seven rebounds in 13 minutes of work.
The two teams return to action to close out the regular season in Castine on Monday at 5:30 pm.
