Mariners Win Metropolitan Conference Championship

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – In its first year of competition in the Metropolitan Conference Championship Meet, Maine Maritime Academy won its first Metro title, utilizing a deep and balanced lineup to score 1,288 points over the three-day meet. That gave the Mariners a 22-point edge over Baruch College, which held a substantial margin over third place Roberts Wesleyan at 1,059. The meet encapsulated the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship as well.  

The Championship is the third in as many years for Maine Maritime. The Mariners won the first two NAC Men's Championship meets in 2022 and 2023. Mariners Head Coach, Tony DeMuro, was named the Metropolitan Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year.

Jay Creegan kicked off the three-day meet's final session with a third-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Baruch's Michael Kravets set the gold standard with a 17:44.42.

Four Mariners scored in the 200-yard backstroke. John Markillie placed third in 2:00.42. Baruch took the top two spots with Youseff Elkhouly in first at 1:56.38. John Driscoll finished in sixth place, with Nicholas Been and Oscar Gonzales contributing eighth and 16th place points.

Maine Maritime got another surge of points in the 100-yard freestyle. Carson Trout took second place in 47.59. He was beat to the wall by Baruch senior Bennett Maczka who posted an NCAA DIII B-Cut time of 45.02. Griffin

Erb placed eighth in 50.22. Brennden Dion, Fox Fernald, and John Gilpin scored 13th, 14th and 18th respectively.

The Mariners continued to pile on points in the 200-yard breaststroke. Aidan Walls placed fourth in 2:16.77 followed by Aidan Burke at 2:17.21. Ponce Saltysiak touched in 2:19.82 for seventh place.

Ryan Maher scored 10th place points in the 200-yard butterfly.

Baruch gathered first place points in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, while the Mariners foursome of Markillie, Erb, Walls, and Trout finished in third.

The NAC Championship results will be broken out of the Metropolitan results in a manual rescoring on Monday. MarinerSports.org will recap the full weekend's worth of awards and final NAC standings on Monday.
