3CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy outscored SUNY-Cobleskill 34-14 in the final quarter of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Women's Basketball Championship game at Smith Gymnasium to earn a 78-62 win, a second consecutive NAC title, and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
Cobleskill (25-2) entered the fourth quarter holding a 48-44 lead, but an 11-2 Mariners (23-4) run changed the complexion of what had been a close contest. An
Erianna Moore three-pointer 59 seconds into the fourth drew the Mariners within one, 48-47.
Evelyn Dagan then blocked a Kyra Pence layup on the ensuing possession before a
Sydney Briscoe jumper accounted for the 20
th and final lead change of the afternoon. She tacked on a free throw to make it 50-48.
Cobleskill trailed 11, 66-55 with 4:44 following a
Maria Barela Layup. The Fighting Tigers quickly cut that down to seven with back-to-back layups from Emily Satterday and Antonia May, but a Moore three on the next trip down put the Mariners back ahead 10, 69-59. The lead remained in double digits the rest of the way.
Moore, who was named the tournament MVP, led all scorers with 24 points with half of them coming in the final quarter. She blocked three shots and recorded seven assists. Barela contributed 21 points, with 10 coming in the fourth quarter. She was named to the All-Tournament Team along with
Sydney Briscoe. Briscoe led all rebounders with 16 collected caroms.
Cobleskill got 18 points from All-Tournament selection Logan Thayne. She was good for four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. The Fighting Tigers' largest lead of the game came with 7:04 left in the first half, 20-10 on a Logan Thayne layup. Â Moore cut that lead in half with a jumper and a trey in the next 90 seconds.
The victory delivered Maine Maritime its second consecutive NAC title and seventh overall in the program's 27 seasons. The Mariners will compete in the NCAA postseason for the fifth time. With the ticket punched, Maine Maritime will learn its postseason destination during the NCAA's selection show on Monday at 2:30 pm.
