Shooting Woes Plague Men's Basketball to Begin 2025

Visiting Colby defeated the Mariners, 81-54, in the first game of the new calendar year

CASTINE--In the first game of the 2025 calendar year for both squads, visiting Colby College shot 50.8 percent from the field while holding Maine Maritime Academy to 35.4 percent on the way to an 81-54 men's basketball non-conference win at Smith Gymnasium on Friday afternoon. The Mariners fall to 3-5 overall and the Mules snap a two-game losing streak to improve to 8-3 on the season.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior co-captains Curt Heinz and Carter Rubin led the Mariners in scoring with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Freshman Gabe Hagar (6 points) snagged a career-best six rebounds.
  • Heinz also had a game-best four assists and Rubin posted a game-high three steals.
Colby Highlights
  • Max Poulton poured in a game-high 27 points on nine 3-pointers. He also led the team with six rebounds and four assists.
  • Jack Lawson (8 points) contributed six rebounds and Marcos Montiel (9 points) produced three steals.
How it Happened
  • The Mariners jumped out to an 11-3 lead 4 minutes and 25 seconds after the opening tip. Junior Josiah Dancy (7 points, 4 rebounds) scored four points and Rubin had three during the run.
  • But Colby outscored MMA 16-4 over a 3:32 span to take the lead, 19-15, at the 12:02 mark. The Mules went 4-for-4 beyond the 3-point arc to fuel the comeback.
  • Over the next several minutes in which the game saw six lead changes, the teams traded points as the Mariners enjoyed their last lead at 24-23 (6:47) on a Heinz layup.
  • Colby ended the first half on an 18-4 run to lead 41-28 at the intermission. Poulton scored nine points during that stretch.
  • The Mules outscored the Mariners 40-26 in the second half, keeping the home team at bay with a double-digit lead.
  • Colby scored 19 points off 15 MMA turnovers, outscored the Mariners' bench 27-16, and 15-2 on fastbreak points.
