CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer team put together a complete team effort in a 3-0 win over No. 6 Thomas College on Wednesday evening in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament Quarterfinal action.
Maine Maritime (11-6-1) impressed from the opening minutes, controlling possession and pushing the tempo throughout the first half against Thomas (5-12-2).
Sophomore
Charlotte Manes opened the scoring in the 31st minute with the eventual game-winner. After a ball deflected off the body of sophomore
Hadley Stoddard, it landed at the feet of Manes, who slipped a shot past the Terriers' keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Junior
Abby Wong extended the Mariners' advantage in the 36th minute, finding the back of the net to make it 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Mariners dominated the opening 45 minutes, holding a 13-0 edge in shots and putting five attempts on frame.
MMA continued to control play after the break, maintaining possession and firing 14 more shots in the second half, including eight on goal. Wong tallied her second goal of the game in the 85th minute off an assist from junior
Sophia Hernandez to seal the 3-0 victory.
Maine Maritime finished the night with a 27-1 advantage in total shots and a 13-1 margin in shots on goal, while earning 10 corner kicks. Wong led the attack with 11 shots (five on target), while Stoddard and Manes each recorded four. Hernandez and senior
Delaney Ennis added three attempts apiece, and the Mariners' defense held Thomas without a shot until the final 30 seconds of play.
With the win, Maine Maritime advances to the NAC semifinals on Saturday to face No. 2 Husson University in Bangor. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
