CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy volleyball team swept the University of Maine at Presque Isle 3-0 on Tuesday in its North Atlantic Conference opener at home.
Maine Maritime (8-5, 1-0 NAC) dominated from the opening serve, jumping out to a 10-2 lead in the first set and cruising to a 25-11 win.
UMaine-Presque Isle (2-6, 0-2 NAC) took the first two points of the second set, but the Mariners battled back to a 9-8 advantage before finishing on a 14-5 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the final frame, the Mariners opened on a 9-0 run and led 16-3 midway through the set before closing out the 25-10 win and the 3-0 sweep.
Junior
Sydney Williams paced the Mariners with 11 kills, hitting .391 with eight digs. Junior
Ally Hadley added five kills, followed by seniors
Ila Smith and
Sophia Biggie with four apiece, while junior
Bre Kerr chipped in three.
Senior
Hunnie Zuber-Stephens recorded a match-high eight service aces, followed by Williams with six, while sophomore
Hannah Tate added three. Kerr and Williams finished with four and three blocks, respectively. Zuber-Stephens also tallied 26 assists, and Tate picked up eight digs.
The Mariners host a pair of tri-matches this weekend, beginning with contests against SUNY Delhi and St. Norbert College at noon and 5 p.m. Saturday, followed by matches against SUNY Cobleskill and St. Norbert at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday.
