CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball improved to 2–0 in North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, earning a 65-40 win over SUNY Cobleskill inside Smith Gymnasium.
The Mariners (2-1 overall) overcame a slow first quarter and used a strong second-half surge to take control of the game. Trailing 15-11 after the opening period, Maine Maritime tightened its defense and outscored the Fighting Tigers 15-10 in the second quarter to take a 26-25 lead into halftime. The Mariners then delivered their most decisive stretch of the afternoon with a 22-point third quarter, while holding Cobleskill to just six points to build a double-digit margin they maintained through the final period.
Addison Forry led Maine Maritime with a double-double, posting 16 points and 12 rebounds while adding two steals. Hailey Blanchard added 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
Maine Maritime's defensive effort was a key factor in the win, holding SUNY Cobleskill to 25.4 percent shooting (15-for-59) and limiting the Fighting Tigers to just 15 second-half points. Maine Maritime also capitalized on turnovers, scoring 21 points off Cobleskill miscues while receiving 23 points from its bench. The Mariners also held a 64-40 advantage in rebounds.
The Mariners will resume play after Thanksgiving, when they hit the road to face NESCAC's Bowdoin College on Tuesday, December 2 at 7:30 pm.
