Jack Banks came off the bench to net 18 points, but it wasn't enough as Maine Maritime Academy lost to host Husson University, 91-71, in the North Atlantic Conference men's basketball tournament quarterfinals at Newman Gymnasium on Friday night. The No. 4 East Division seeded Mariners end their season at 13-11--their best records in two decades. The East No. 1 seeded Eagles improve to 19-7 overall.
All five Husson starters scored in double digits led by Jeremy Moronta with a game-high 29 points, followed by Riles Neff with 17, Connor Heald scored 13, Scott Lewis had 11, and Gil Matondo, 10. Tope Alao (9 points) led the team with nine rebounds, while Lewis dished a game-best nine assists.
The first half featured five lead changes. A three-pointer by freshman
Gabe Hagar (12 points) gave MMA its last lead at 11-10 with 14 minutes and 45 seconds remaining. Moronta scored on a layup two possessions later, putting the Eagles in front for good 14-13.
Leading 38-28 at the 4:42 mark, Husson ended the first half on a 10-6 run to lead 48-34 at the intermission.
In the second half, MAA trailed by double digits for most of the times as the Eagles built as much as a 25-point lead.
Junior
Josiah Dancy tied Heinz for the team lead with six assists, while the latter also swatted a game-high three blocked shots.
Husson outscored MMA 16-5 on points off turnovers and made 14-of-19 free throws (MMA 5-9).
