Box Score CASTINE--"The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" is a song released by one-hit wonder Timbuk 3 in 1986. Fast forward nearly 40 years later, it could serve as the theme song and show what's in store for the 2025 Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse program and beyond.

That's because three freshmen made the starting lineup today and accounted for six goals as Maine Maritime showed its mettle despite an 11-10 non-conference loss to an undefeated University of New England (3-0) squad in the season opener for the Mariners at Ritchie Field on Saturday.

Ryan Dunstan notched a hat trick in his collegiate debut for game-high honors. Tobey Lappin added two goals and one assist, while Tristan Reinhold chipped in a goal and an assist. Also recording a multi-point afternoon for MMA were seniors Brendan Reddington (1g, 2a) and Sam Nichol (1g, 1a).

Shea Fogarty scored a game-high five points on three goals and two assists to pace the UNE offense. Finn McCoy also had a hat trick among four points, Stephen Fogarty (1g, 3a) also had four points and Kyle Dunn produced three points (2g, 1a).

Dunn scored the go-ahead goal that broke a 7-7 tie to open the scoring in the fourth quarter, igniting a 3-0 run for the Nor'Easters who led 10-7 with 8 minutes and 58 seconds left.

Lappin and Reinhold scored man-up goals 1:19 apart to bring MMA within 10-9 at the 6:34 mark, but McCoy found the back of the cage on a feed from Fogarty for an insurance goal at 4:18.

Evan Hazard made 17 saves to get the win. Sophomore Andrew Noyes made 16 stops to keep the Mariners within striking distance all day long.

Sophomore Bryce Crowell was outstanding in the face-off "X" for MMA, winning 16 of 23 and tying classmate Matthew Villeneuve for a game-high six groundballs.

The teams were tied 2-2 after the first quarter and MMA outscored UNE 4-2 in the second to take a 6-4 halftime advantage.

Maine Maritime is back in action next Saturday (3 p.m.) against non-conference foe Wheaton College (Mass.) right here at Ritchie Field.
