Strong Third Quarter Lifts Mariners to NAC Road Win at UMF

Maine Maritime used a balanced offense with four scorers in double digits

FARMINGTON, Maine--The Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball team saw four scorers in double-digits and turned a close game at halftime into an 80-61 rout over UMaine-Farmington in North Atlantic Conference action at Dearborn Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. The Mariners improve to 18-4 overall and 11-0 in the NAC-East Division, while the Beavers drop to 10-11 on the season and 6-5 in the NAC-East.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Senior Erianna Moore led all scorers with 20 points on a game-high-tying four 3-pointers, passed for six assists, made two steals and had three rebounds.
  • Senior Sydney Briscoe pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, scored 10 points and had four assists.
  • Classmate Makenzie Monzon tallied 10 points, dished seven assists and recorded five rebounds.
  • Junior Jasmine Anderson (4 points) chipped in eight rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots in just eight minutes off the bench.
  • Freshman Addison Forry scored 13 points off the bench on 5-for-6 field goal shooting (2-2 3FG), produced two blocks and two rebounds.
UMF Highlights

  • Jaydn Pingree (4 points, 4 rebounds) led all student-athletes with eight assists.
  • Sarah Poli (6 points) had eight rebounds and three assists.
How it Happened
  • In a close opening 20 minutes that featured eight lead changes and three ties, Maine Maritime had the biggest lead of the first half at 35-29 on a jumper by Anderson before going into the halftime locker room up 35-30.
  • But the Mariners took command in the second half with a dominating third quarter by outscoring UMF 22-11 to increase their lead to 57-41.
  • After a Mayo three-pointer tied the game 35-all, sophomore Hailey Blanchard (8 points, 2 blocks, 2 rebounds) scored a traditional three-point play on a layup and free throw, and Forry added a couple treys of her own, to ignite a 9-0 MMA run over a span of 99 seconds to lead 44-35 with 6 minutes and 33 seconds left.
  • In the fourth quarter, MMA never was threatened and maintained a double-digit cushion for the remainder of the game.
  • The Mariners outrebounded the Beavers 44-34 to outscore them on second-chance points, 18-2.
  • Maine Maritime also outscored UMF on points off turnovers (17-10) and had a deeper bench (26-11).
  • The Beavers last held the lead, 28-26, on a Grace Dwyer (8 points) triple with 2:58 left prior to halftime.
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Maine Maritime leads the all-time series 32-18, including a 13-9 road record in Farmington, and has won the last nine meetings.
  • The Mariners held the Beavers to 25.0 percent shooting from the floor in the decisive third quarter.
  • Maine Maritime had nine blocks for a season high tonight.
  • Except for the 2020-21 COVID-19 campaign, the Mariners have won at least 18 games in each of the last seven seasons.
