Mariners Take a Bite Out of the USM Huskies on the Road

Sam Nichol (6 goals) and Trey Marcil (8 points) lead the way in MMA's 23-3 win

Box Score GORHAM, Maine--Maine Maritime Academy sprinted to a 15-0 halftime lead and never looked back in a dominating 23-3 victory over host University of Southern Maine in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Hannaford Field on Tuesday. Maine Maritime is on a three-game winning streak to move above .500 for the first time this season at 3-2, while Southern Maine has lost five-straight to drop to 1-5 overall.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Junior Trey Marcil led all scorers with eight points on three goals and a game-high five assists.
  • Senior and current North Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Sam Nichol pumped in a game-best six goals among seven points.
  • Classmate Brendan Reddington provided four points, including three goals.
  • Sophomore goalie Andrew Noyes, the reigning NAC Defensive Player of the Week, made three saves while not allowing a goal to get the win.
  • Freshman Tobey Lappin scored four goals in the first half to help set the tone for MMA. The most recent NAC Rookie of the Week added a game-high three caused turnovers and four ground balls
  • Sophomore Jaden Knight (4 points) and freshmen Ryan Dunstan (3 points), Tristan Reinhold also had multiple goals with two apiece.
  • Sophomore Bryce Crowell led MMA with 16 ground balls and he won all 21 of his face-off attempts, both game highs.
  • Junior Cole Michaud was a perfect 9-for-9 at the face-off "X" for a personal record.
  • Backup goalies Connor Murphy, a sophomore, and Will Farrell, a junior, each played 15 minutes and had three and two saves, respectively.
Southern Maine Highlights
  • Patrick O'Driscoll led USM with a goal and an assist.
  • Andrew James and James Kastrinakis also scored for the Huskies.
  • Adam Coley also found the scoresheet with an assist.
  • Luke Gagner and Nick Pastusak led the team with four ground balls apiece.

How it Happened

  • Maine Maritime got all the scoring it would need in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead over 15 minutes. Crowell won the opening face-off and then quickly fed Marcil for the goal with just 2 seconds off the clock. The Mariners' second goal was more methodical with more than two-and-a-half minutes of possession time as Nichol buried a shot, unassisted, with 8 minutes and 13 seconds remaining. Reddington made it a three-goal cushion with another unassisted goal at the 2:03 mark.
  • The visitors left little doubt on the final result in the second quarter by outscoring USM 12-0.
  • O'Driscoll put USM on the scoreboard with 13:39 left in the third quarter.
  • The Mariners outshot the Huskies by a 67-16 count, killed off all three USM extra-man opportunities, and had a 54-36 ground balls advantage.

  • Southern Maine is a member of the Little East Conference, where USM is picked to finish in a seventh-place tie.
