Sam Nichol tied his career high with a game-leading six goals, but Maine Maritime Academy couldn't solve a balanced Bates College offense and tough defense in a 28-8 loss in men's lacrosse non-conference action at Garcelon Field on Wednesday evening. Maine Maritime drops to 3-4 on the season, while the host Bobcats up their overall mark to 6-1.
Maine Maritime Highlights
- Nichol also set a season high with his six points.
- Junior Trey Marcil and freshman Tobey Lappin, who is the two-time reigning North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week, also found the back of the cage. Marcil added an assist for a multi-point game.
- Backup junior goalie Will Farrell played the second half and finished with a game-high 11 saves for a personal best.
- NAC Defensive Player of the Week Bryce Crowell, a sophomore, led MMA with seven ground balls.
Bates Highlights
- Colin Eaton led the Bobcats with five goals, followed by Gray Doyle with four, Javi Werner, Jack Goldbach and Jack Market with three apiece.
- Goldbach led all scorers with eight points, which included a game-high five assists.
- Eaton added an assist for six points and Market had five points on the day.
- Miles Schmidt led all student-athletes with 10 ground balls and he went 16-for-23 at the face-off "X."
How it Happened
- Maine Maritime gave Bates fits in the opening quarter with two Nichols goals sandwiched around five for the Bobcats.
- But the Bobcats figured things out in the second when they took control with a 10-4 frame for a 15-6 lead at halftime.
- In the second half, Bates maintained the offensive pressure as Maine Maritime was unable to recover from its slow start.

- The teams have met in each of the last three seasons with Bates holding a 6-0 all-time series lead, including a 3-0 mark at home.
- The Bobcats saw their five-game win streak snapped by nationally No. 18-ranked Middlebury College, 17-11, on Saturday.
- In 2024, Bates defeated MMA 16-8.
- Nichol takes over the team lead with 22 goals and ties Marcil with 25 points.
- Nichol also surpassed the 200-point milestone and now has 205 (136g, 69a) in his career; he's the fifth Mariner to reach that mark.
- Crowell is one of the nation's leaders with a NAC-best 10.43 ground balls per game.
