Sam Nichol Pots Game-High Five Goals as Mariners Pick Up First Win

Tobey Lappin also recorded a hat-trick in the 15-12 victory against the Monks

Box Score STANDISH, Maine—Sophomore Ryker Spear scored the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter, and senior Sam Nichol pumped in a game-high five tallies, to power Maine Maritime Academy to a 15-12 non-conference win over host Saint Joseph's College of Maine in men's lacrosse action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday.

Maine Maritime picks up its first win of the season to move to 1-2 overall, while the Monks slip below .500 at 2-3.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Freshman Tobey Lappin registered his first collegiate hat trick among a career-best four points. He also had a game-high-tying three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
  • Senior Brendan Reddington (2 goals), junior Trey Marcil (1g, 2a), sophomore Jaden Knight (1g, 1a) and Spear (2g) also enjoyed a multi-point afternoon to aid a Mariners offense that outshot the Monks, 49-35.
  • Sophomore goalie Andrew Noyes makes eight saves to chalk up his first win in a MMA jersey.
  • Classmate Bryce Crowell dominated the face-off "X" again by winning 19 of 29 draws and scooping up a game-best 11 ground balls.
Saint Joseph's College Highlights
  • Tiger Hopkins recorded a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists.
  • Calvin Heline had three goals and five points, and Brandon Cavicchi also had a hat trick.
  • Anthony Samiotes tied for the game lead with three caused turnovers.
  • Reed Wescott helped keep the Monks close in the fourth quarter with 12 stops.
How it Happened
  • Spear scored his second goal of the day with 7 minutes and 2 seconds left in the game to put MMA ahead for good at 12-11.
  • Reddington, Nichol and Knight added insurance goals over the final 5:44 to offset Hopkins' last tally and preserve the win.
  • Nichol had tied the game, 11-11, to open the scoring in the fourth quarter after SCJ had ended the third with an 11-10 advantage on goals from Cavicchi and Will Levesque.
  • In the second half, the teams traded goals and neither side had more than a two-goal lead until MMA scored late for the final margin.
  • The teams struggled with turnovers in the first quarter when the Monks led 3-1 after 15 minutes. Cam Raymond took a feed from Heline to put SJC up 1-0 at the 12:41 mark before Nichol got MMA on the scoreboard at 5:33. Hopkins and Heline then scored 1:29 apart to make it a two-goal lead.
  • The Monks stretched their biggest lead at 4-1 on a goal from Cavicchi at 13:28 of the second.
  • But the Mariners stormed ahead for their first lead of 6-4 thanks to a 5-0 run ignited by Nichol over a 7:12 span.
  • The Monks ended the first half with three unanswered goals to take a 7-6 halftime lead. The Mariners won the second half, 9-5.
  • Maine Maritime also had statistical advantages in shots on goal (27-20), ground balls (41-32) and face-off wins (19-11).
