Mariners Throttle Fighting Tigers on the Road with Season-High 28 Goals

Fourteen different student-athletes record at least one point for Maine Maritime

Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y.--Freshman Tobey Lappin tied a career high with nine goals, and junior Trey Marcil also had a career day with five tallies, to power the Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse team to a dominating 28-6 North Atlantic Conference victory over host SUNY-Cobleskill at Red Dragon Field on Sunday morning. The Mariners even their overall record to 5-5 and 2-0 in the NAC, while the Fighting Tigers drop to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in the conference. 

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Lappin, who added two assists for a game-best 11 points, also set personal records with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
  • Sophomore Bryce Crowell (1g, 1a) won 17-of-19 face-offs and scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls.
  • Junior Cole Michaud (1g) also shined in the face-off "X" with 15 wins in 17 draws and he had eight ground balls.
  • Freshman Ryan Dunstan (2g, 3a) and senior Brendan Reddington (1g, 4a) had five points apiece.
  • Freshman Tristan Reinhold produced three assists, two ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Also recording a multi-point game were senior Sam Nichol (4+2=6) and sophomores Ryker Spear (2g), Matthew Villeneuve (2a).
  • Villeneuve also had a career- and game-high six caused turnovers and five ground balls.
  • Freshman Joey Somma notched a career-best six ground balls and senior Will Arnone had four for a season high.
SUNY-Cobleskill Highlights
  • Albert Sippio led the team with four goals.
  • Alex Baker chipped in two goals and six ground balls.
  • Rob Staubitz contributed three assists and five ground balls.
How it Happened
  • Maine Maritime got all the offense it would need in the first quarter by taking a 6-1 lead, with Sam Nichol, Lappin and Marcil netting two apiece.
  • The Mariners blew the game open in the second outscoring Cobleskill 10-1 to take a commanding 16-2 advantage at halftime.
  • Crowell was credited with the game-winning goal with 13 minutes and 2 seconds left in the second quarter after he won a face-off and picked up the ground ball, then ran down the alley to find the back of the cage for a 7-2 lead.
  • Besides the scoreboard, MMA also dominated in statistical categories: shots (59-15), shots on goal (44-10), face-off wins (32-4), ground balls (59-21), clears (14/16-16/26) and turnovers (23-29).
  • Baker tied the game 1-1 at the 12:06 mark of the opening quarter before MMA scored 26 of the game's next 27 goals.
  • All told, 14 different student-athletes recorded at least one point for Maine Maritime.
Inside the Boxscore
  • Maine Maritime and Cobleskill were supposed to play on the Fighting Tigers' campus facility, but the game was moved to nearby SUNY-Oneonta for better field conditions.
  • The Mariners lead the all-time series 4-0, including three wins away from home.
  • Five of Cobleskill's six goals came via man-up opportunities.
  • Maine Maritime today established season highs in goals (28), assists (20), total points (48), ground balls (59), caused turnovers (20) and margin of victory (22).
