CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball program is excited to announce its 2025–26 recruiting class — the first under head coach Cedric Gillette.
The second signee of the class is Karsten Walker, a 6-foot-4 wing from Tampa, Florida. Walker played for head coach Augustine Gaddis at Sumner High School, where he averaged 15.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for the Stingrays.
Walker led Sumner to its first-ever 7A District 11 championship, helping the program make history. He also earned numerous individual accolades, including selection as one of the top 25 players in Hillsborough County — one of the largest counties in the United States. He was named a Western Conference All-Star, a First Team All-Western Conference honoree, and an Academic All-Star. Walker also set the school record for most points in a single game.
Outside of basketball, Walker enjoys fashion and music. He also plays for the AAU program XPC Elite.
Walker plans to major in international business and logistics and joins a Mariners team coming off its winningest season since 2002–03.
"I chose MMA because it is an amazing opportunity to continue my athletic career and put myself in a great position for a great job and a successful life," Walker said.
What They're Saying About Karsten Walker
Cedric Gillette, Maine Maritime Head Coach:
"Karsten is a lights-out shooter with great positional size and athleticism. I first saw him at a camp in Tampa, and he stood out immediately with his quick release and consistent shooting. He played for a great high school coach who emphasized player development, and Karsten thrived in that system. He's a very physical and competitive player — a great shooter who's not afraid to get into the paint. We built a strong relationship with Karsten throughout the recruiting process, which culminated in his verbal commitment during an on-campus visit. We are extremely excited to get Karsten to MMA."
Augustine Gaddis, Sumner High School Head Coach:
"Karsten Walker is the definition of sweat equity — you get out what you put in, and Karsten is a living testament. He's a gym rat who puts in countless hours. For him, basketball isn't a job or practice — it's life. His hard work, dedication and commitment earned him First Team All-Conference, Top 25 in Hillsborough County, Hillsborough County All-Star, Academic All-Star, team MVP and now the opportunity to continue his career at Maine Maritime. The habits that made him successful in high school will continue to serve him well at the next level."
Ryan Bethoney, Former Sumner High School Head Coach:
"Coaching Karsten has been an absolute privilege. From day one, he set himself apart not just with his shooting, but with how hard he works when no one is watching. He's the kid in the gym before school, getting up shots long after practice, and always pushing himself. I've seen him grow as a player, thinker and leader. He's earned every opportunity, and I know he'll bring that same drive to college. His new team is getting a true competitor, a relentless worker and a great young man."
Albert Turner, Former Sumner Assistant Coach:
"It was a pleasure coaching Karsten. He's a phenomenal student-athlete who excels both on the court and in the classroom. Karsten is an elite scorer and a true student of the game. I look forward to seeing how he continues to develop at the next level."
