FORT KENT, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer team overcame an early University of Maine at Fort Kent goal to earn a 2-1 season-opening road win Friday evening.
Fort Kent (1-1) struck first in the ninth minute, but Maine Maritime (1-0) evened the match in the 22nd when junior
Abby Wong scored to make it 1-1.
The Bengals held a 4-3 shot advantage in the first half, but junior goalkeeper
Isa Thesing made two saves to keep the match tied.
Sophomore
Hadley Stoddard netted the game-winner in the 79th minute, giving the Mariners a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. MMA outshot Fort Kent 6-2 in the second half and 9-6 for the match, putting six attempts on goal.
Thesing finished with three saves, while Wong recorded a team-high four shot attempts.
Friday's win marked the first for head coach
Levi Evans during his time with the Mariners.
Maine Maritime returns to Aroostook County on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup against the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
