Gabriel Toledo both scored in the first half as Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer earned a hard-fought 2-1 road win over Plymouth State University on Saturday.
MMA (1-0-1) struck at the 12:16 mark when freshman
Simon Dietz set up Villeneuve for a quick 1-0 Mariners lead.
Plymouth State (1-2) tied the match 1-1 at 28:50 of the first half, but the Mariners responded just before halftime, as Toledo connected on a shot that gave MMA a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
The Mariners held the Panthers scoreless in the second half, limiting PSU to eight shot attempts. Freshman goalkeeper
Nolan Gaboriault turned away two shots on goal, while freshman
Kole Wayman added another save in the opening 45 minutes.
Maine Maritime converted two of its three shot attempts, both on goal.
The Mariners will host Central Maine Community College in their home opener on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
