CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team saw its four-match North Atlantic Conference winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as Thomas College earned a 1-0 victory at Ritchie Field.
The Mariners fell to 4-6-2 overall and 4-1-0 in NAC play despite a strong defensive effort and seven saves from senior goalkeeper
Reagan Moynihan.
Moynihan kept Maine Maritime level through a scoreless first half, making five saves before the break as Thomas controlled much of the possession and outshot the Mariners 7-3 over the opening 45 minutes.
The Terriers finally broke through in the 66th minute when Thomas converted the match's lone goal at the 65:36 mark.
Maine Maritime generated its best offensive opportunities through sophomore
Piercen Fisher, who accounted for four of the team's seven shots and both shots on goal. Fisher tested Thomas goalkeeper Jamie Fischer late in the first half and again in the 84th minute, but Fischer made both saves to preserve the shutout.
The Mariners were limited to seven total shots and just two on target, while Thomas finished with a 22-7 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
In addition to Moynihan's seven-save effort, Maine Maritime's back line helped keep the match within reach throughout the afternoon. The Mariners allowed only one goal despite facing sustained pressure and eight Thomas corner kicks.
Senior's
Hunter Crea,
James Baur, and
Holden Nichols each added a shot for Maine Maritime, while senior's
Dillon Wilkinson,
Josh Martin, and junior
Garrison Fisher played the full 90 minutes defensively.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday on the road against the University of Southern Maine beginning at 7 p.m.
