BANGOR, Maine – The Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team's postseason run came to an end Wednesday evening as the Mariners fell to Husson University, 3-1, in North Atlantic Conference men's soccer semifinal action at John P. Boucher Field.
Despite being heavily outshot, Maine Maritime battled back to even the match early in the second half before Husson pulled away with two late goals.
Senior goalkeeper
Reagan Moynihan was a key reason the Mariners remained within striking distance throughout the contest, recording eight saves while facing 21 shots and 11 shots on goal.
Husson broke through first in the 38th minute when Miguel Diaz Alvarez scored to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Mariners answered shortly after the break. In the 51st minute, sophomore
Piercen Fisher capitalized on one of Maine Maritime's few offensive opportunities, scoring the equalizer to make it 1-1.
The match remained deadlocked for more than 20 minutes as the Mariners' defense continued to withstand pressure from the Eagles' attack.
Moynihan made several key second-half saves to keep the match level, including stops on Jorge Mora and Chadi Hamadi. Senior
Harris Stoddard nearly put the Mariners up 2-1, but Stoddard's header was turned away by the Husson keeper.
The Eagles regained the lead in the 72nd minute when Diaz Alvarez scored his second goal of the night. Just over four minutes later, Santiago Jimenez added an insurance goal to extend the Eagles' advantage to 3-1.
