CASTINE, Maine – On Wednesday, April 16, Maine Maritime's Athletic Department partnered with the Penobscot Area Special Olympics to host the 13th Annual Bocce Tournament after a one-year hiatus due to weather in 2025.
This year, 57 teams consisting of over 200 Special Olympic athletes and unified partners registered for the event and traveled to Castine to participate. Over 90 student-athletes, coaches, staff and friends from Maine Maritime helped officiate, cheer and participate in the tournament.
Maine Maritime Academy competes in NCAA Division III, which launched a Special Olympics initiative during the 2010-2011 academic year, and has since provided the opportunity for student-athletes to engage with Special Olympics, fostering a mutual learning experience between Division III student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes.
