BANGOR, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse team put together a dominant team performance on Saturday paced by an 8-0 third-quarter run to defeat Husson University 16-7 on the road and secure both home-field advantage and the top seed in the NAC tournament.
Maine Maritime (9-5, 5-0 NAC) opened Saturday's conference winner-take-all showdown against Husson (10-4, 4-1 NAC) with a 4-1 opening-quarter run, paced by two goals each from freshman
Ryan Parent and sophomore
Tobey Lappin.
The Mariners and Eagles played even 3-3 in the second quarter, giving MMA a 7-4 advantage at the break. Parent added his third and fourth goals in the quarter, while Lappin notched his third score.
In the third, MMA pulled away, outscoring the Eagles 8-0 and took a commanding 15-4 edge. Junior
Ryker Spear started the scoring and finished the quarter with an impressive four goals, while senior
Cole Michaud, Lappin and freshman
Randall Walker all scored.
Parent added the Mariners lone goal in the fourth quarter, as Husson managed to outscore the Mariners 3-1, but the damage had been done as MMA came away with the 16-7 decision.
MMA finished with a 62-30 shot advantage and a 33-20 shot on goal edge, adding 53 ground balls and causing nine turnovers.
Parent led all scorers with eight points, scoring six goals and adding two assists, Spear and Lappin both finished with four goals, while senior
Trey Marcil dished out a game-high four assists. Additionally, junior
Jaden Knight added three assists.
Junior
Bryce Crowell impressed on the faceoff finishing 17-23 with 12 ground balls and one assist. Lappin scooped up seven ground balls, while freshman
Hunter Arno posted a team-high three caused turnovers.
Sophomore
Ben Kieu stood tall in cage, recording 13 saves on 20 shot attempts and earning the win.
The Mariners now host Thomas College on Saturday in the semifinals of the NAC Tournament beginning at 2 p.m.
