CASTINE, Maine — Senior
Trey Marcil broke the Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse program record for career assists in the Mariners 16-12 North Atlantic Conference Championship loss to Husson University on Sunday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
The Mariners battled throughout the afternoon and trimmed a three-goal deficit late in the first quarter after back-to-back scores from sophomore
Tobey Lappin and freshman
Ryan Parent cut the lead to 4-3 heading into the second.
Parent led the Maine Maritime offense with five goals and one assist on seven shots on goal, while Lappin added a hat trick. Marcil contributed one goal and three assists, and junior
Bryce Crowell, sophomore
Tristan Reinhold and freshman
Randall Walker each scored once.
Husson opened the second quarter with three-straight goals to build a 7-3 advantage before the Mariners responded behind Reinhold and Crowell. Walker later scored off a Marcil assist and Parent found the back of the net with 58 seconds remaining in the half to bring Maine Maritime within 10-7 at the break.
The Eagles stretched the lead again in the third quarter, but Maine Maritime continued to answer. Parent scored midway through the period off an assist from freshman
Connor Harvey, and Marcil scored with three seconds left in the quarter to make it 14-9 entering the fourth.
Lappin added two more fourth-quarter goals and Parent scored his fifth of the game with 2:58 remaining, but the Mariners could not complete the comeback.
Crowell was dominant at the faceoff stripe for Maine Maritime, winning 17 of 28 faceoffs while collecting a team-high 10 ground balls. Marcil added five ground balls, and sophomore
Ben Kieu made 12 saves in goal for the Mariners.
With the loss the Mariners season comes to an end.
