Men's basketball adds Bonilla to 2026-27 recruiting class

CASTINE, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy Men's Basketball program is excited to announce the addition of Miles Bonilla to its 2026 recruiting class, the second under Head Coach Cedric Gillette.

Bonilla, a 6'4" wing from Santa Clara, California, joins the Mariners after spending the past season at Foothill College. A team captain and one of the top perimeter shooters on the roster, Bonilla averaged 5.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game while shooting an impressive 37% from three-point range. His ability to stretch the floor with his shooting, combined with his physical style of play, helped lead Foothill to a 19-win season.

Prior to Foothill College, Bonilla starred at Wilcox High School, where he helped lead the Chargers to the 2023 league championship. He earned Second Team All-District honors and finished his high school career as a 1,000-point scorer, cementing his place as one of the program's top offensive players.

Away from the court, Bonilla enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching sports, and playing basketball. He chose Maine Maritime Academy because it offers the perfect combination of competitive basketball, an outstanding education in International Business & Logistics, and a supportive community. Bonilla is excited to continue his academic and athletic career at MMA and will major in International Business & Logistics.

"We are really fired up to add Miles to our program. He was one of the best shooters in Cali JUCO last season, and that's something that immediately caught our attention. Any time you can bring in a guy who can shoot it the way Miles can, it opens up your entire offense. On top of that, he's already played high-level junior college basketball at Foothill, so he's coming in with experience against really good competition and knows what it takes to win.

The more we watched him, the more we liked him. Miles is a physical, hard-nosed player who is not going to get out-toughed. He competes every possession, rebounds, makes the extra play, and just does a lot of winning things. We got the chance to watch him in an open gym at Foothill after the season, and that only confirmed everything we already thought about him. He shot the ball at a really high level, made plays for other people, and competed his tail off the entire time.

Miles came out to campus early in the summer, and we had a great visit with him. Over the course of the recruiting process, we built a really strong relationship, and it just felt like a natural fit from the beginning. He's a great person, he loves to compete, and he fits exactly the type of culture we're trying to build here. I think our fans are really going to enjoy watching him play, and I can't wait to get the opportunity to coach him."

"Miles Bonilla is one of the hardest working players I've ever coached. From the day he got here, he showed up every day ready to work, compete, and get better. He developed into a great shooter and had some huge moments for us, including tying our school record with six 3PT's in a game. What I'm most proud of, though, isn't the shots he made, it's the person he is. Miles trusted the process, even when things didn't always go his way. He stayed positive, kept working, and earned the respect of everyone around him. He is the type of player every coach hopes to have because he leads by example, puts the team first, and represents the program the right way on and off the court. Coaching Miles over the last two years has been a pleasure. If I had the chance to coach another player like him, I would do it in a heartbeat.
