CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Maine Maritime Academy volleyball team dropped a four-set match to the University of Scranton, 3-1, on Friday night at Rockwell Cage.
The Mariners opened the match with a 25-21 victory in the first set before Scranton rallied to win the next three sets, 26-24, 25-19 and 25-18.
Maine Maritime came out strong in the opening set, overcoming a competitive start to take a 25-21 victory. The Mariners used a balanced offensive attack and closed the set on a 4-0 run, with
Faith Reed recording a pair of points during the decisive stretch.
The second set featured 12 ties and six lead changes as the teams battled throughout. Maine Maritime held a 24-22 advantage late in the set, but Scranton scored the final four points to take a 26-24 victory and even the match.
Scranton carried the momentum into the third set, building a lead midway through the frame. The Mariners battled back late, scoring five of the final seven points, but Scranton held on for a 25-19 win.
Maine Maritime again stayed within striking distance in the fourth set. The Mariners led 13-10 before Scranton answered with a 10-4 run to take a 20-17 lead. Maine Maritime scored three of the next six points, but Scranton closed the match with a 25-18 victory.
Senior
Ally Hadley led the Mariners with 15 kills on 42 attacks while adding eight digs and 16 points. Senior
Sydney Williams finished with 12 kills on 23 attacks, hitting a team-best .478, and added three total blocks.
Freshman
Lyla Annen recorded seven kills, three digs and eight points, while freshman
Kelsie Murray contributed two kills and two total blocks. Freshman
Faith Reed directed the Maine Maritime offense with 31 assists and added six digs, one total block and 2.5 points.
Junior
Hannah Tate led the Mariners with 26 digs and added two assists, two service aces and two points. Junior
Amber Cooklin contributed 11 digs and two service aces.
As a team, Maine Maritime recorded 36 kills, eight service aces and five total blocks. The Mariners finished with 55 digs and 34 assists.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday against No. 7 Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brandeis University beginning at 11 a.m.
