CASTINE, Maine — Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer regained the lead late in the second half and held on for a 2-1 North Atlantic Conference women's soccer victory over Vermont State University Johnson on Saturday evening at Ritchie Field behind a two-goal effort from senior
Taylor Webster.
The Mariners controlled play throughout, outshooting the Badgers 22-5 and holding an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Webster led the way for Maine Maritime with both goals. She opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finishing a pass from freshman
Kylee Cyr to give the Mariners a 1-0 advantage at the 20:12 mark.
The lead held until the 64th minute when Jenna Jones scored for VTSU Johnson off an assist from Emilia Garcia, tying the match at 1-1.
Maine Maritime continued to apply pressure and nearly regained the lead when freshman
Harlow O'Leary struck the right post and senior
Abby Wong hit the crossbar during a flurry of chances midway through the second half.
The breakthrough finally came in the 76th minute. After O'Leary's shot was stopped by the goalkeeper, Webster found the back of the net at 75:55, scoring her second goal of the game to put the Mariners back in front, 2-1.
O'Leary and Cyr each recorded an assist for Maine Maritime, while junior
Hadley Stoddard added three shots on goal. Webster finished with two goals on three shots.

Isa Thesing earned the win for the Mariners, making one save. The Mariners' defense limited Johnson to just two shots on target.
Maine Maritime finished with four corner kicks and generated consistent offensive pressure throughout the contest, recording 22 total shots compared to five for Johnson.
The Mariners return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Vermont to faceoff against Vermont State University Lyndon beginning at 2:30 p.m.
