GORHAM, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy volleyball team dropped its season opener to the University of New England, 3-1, Friday night at Hill Gym, falling 25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17.
The Mariners responded from a first-set loss by taking the second set, 25-21. Maine Maritime recorded 16 kills in the set while hitting .275, its strongest offensive performance of the match.
Senior
Sydney Williams led the Mariners offensively with 16 kills on 52 attacks, hitting .212 for the match.
Freshman
Kelsie Murray provided an efficient offensive performance with six kills on 16 attacks and a team-best .312 hitting percentage. She also recorded two blocks.
Freshman
Jaslene Butler added seven kills, while freshman
Lyla Annen finished with 10 kills and 11 points. Senior
Ally Hadley contributed seven kills and a team-high 25 assists, while freshman
Faith Reed added 14 assists.
Junior
Hannah Tate led the Mariners with 21 digs and added four assists, while Williams chipped in 13 digs and Hadley finished with 10. As a team, Maine Maritime totaled 68 digs, 48 kills and 45 assists.
The Mariners will look to bounce back on Saturday when the battle both Dean College and the University of Southern Maine in the final day of the Maine Coast Classic beginning at Noon.
