CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy welcomed back their alumni this past weekend and celebrated the raising of Adam St. John's #12 jersey into the rafters inside of the Margaret Chase Smith Gymnasium.
Adam St. John, a 1985 graduate, was inducted into the William J. Mottola Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010 and is the first men's basketball player to have his jersey honored high above the hardwood of Smith Gymnasium.
St. John scored 1,405 points in only three seasons of play for the Mariners, ranking second all-time in Maine Maritime Academy men's basketball history. During the 1984-85 season, he averaged 28.9 points per game, leading the nation in NCAA Division III scoring.
His many accomplishments include Northeast College Conference All-Star in 1983, '84 and '85, NCC MVP in 1985; Maine College All-Star in from 1983-85; 2nd team All-Maine in 1985; All-Maine Collegiate Basketball Team in 1983, '84 and '85, and MMA Basketball's only All-American in 1985, earning Honorable Mention status.
"It is tremendously befitting as the first All-American in program history, that his #12 be the first Men's Basketball jersey high above the court in Smith Gymnasium. Adam's many accomplishments speak for themselves, and we couldn't be happier that we were able to honor him in this special way. Once a Mariner, always a Mariner," said Head Men's Basketball Coach David Muchnick.
