Castine, ME - The Maine Maritime Men's Basketball team won in dramatic fashion when Andy Ball (Hermon, ME) hit a jumper at the buzzer to beat the UMaine Machias Clippers 69-68 in a non-conference match-up Wednesday evening.
The Mariners trailed by three points with just under 15 seconds left in regulation before junior Sam Bell (Calais, ME) made a traditional three-point play to tie the game at 59-59. The Clippers had one last shot to win the game but missed two attempts and the game went into overtime.
The Mariners jumped out to a six point lead in OT before the Clippers started their come back. UMaine Machias took a one point lead with seven seconds left in overtime when Hampton Mack (Orlando, FL) scored on a nifty feed from Will Lewis (Apopka, FL). Mack missed the free throw but the Clippers led 68-67. The Mariners advanced the ball into their own end and called a time out with 3.1 seconds left in the game. The inbounds pass came to Andy Ball on the left wing and he drained an 18 footer as time expired to give the Mariners the thrilling victory.
MMA improves to 2-0 on the season for the first time since the 2002-2003 season. The Clippers fall to 3-2 on the year.
The Mariners were led by Paul Campbell (Camden, ME) who scored 23 points and dished out six assists. Sam Bell scored 14 points while Dom Drake (Brewer, ME) had a game high 10 assists and six steals.
Will Ellis led the Clippers with 22 points and five assists while shooting 9-for-22 from the floor. Hampton Mack was outstanding in the loss scoring 15 points and grabbing a game high 20 rebounds.
