Castleton, VT - Michael Martinez (Barrington, IL) scored a
career-high eight goals to lead Castleton State College to a 16-10
win over Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference (NAC)
men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
Martinez converted four goals in the first half and four more in
the second, including three during a 6-0 run that spanned the final
10 minutes of the third period and first two of the fourth. During
the stretch, Castleton turned a 7-6 deficit into a 12-7 lead,
effectively
putting the game away.
Andrew DiSalvo (Glastonbury, CT) scored two quick goals to open
the second half, giving the Mariners the 7-6 lead with 13:45 left
in the third period. From that point on, Martinez and the Spartans
took over. Jake Rick (Rochester, NY) set up Martinez's 26th goal of
the season
with 10:16 left in the period to tie the game at seven-all. James
Bascom (Barre, VT) scored unassisted with 8:29 left to give the
Spartans the lead they would not relinquish. Samuel Bailey
(Hartford, VT) scored 25 seconds later to push the lead to 9-7, and
Kevin McCarthy (Johnson, VT) added an unassisted tally two minutes
later before Martinez capped the
rally with a pair of goals.
McCarthy ended the game with three goals, while Bailey added two
goals and two assists. Rick and Nohea King (St. Albans, VT) each
tallied one goal and one assist, and Bascom rounded out the scoring
with a single marker.
DiSalvo scored a team-high six goals and Wade Mondoux (North
Berwick, ME) tallied two. Tom Houle (Manchester,
NH) had one goal, two assists and Christopher Keiley (Holliston,
MA) chipped in one goal and one assist.
Castleton was solid all game in transition, corralling 70 ground
balls to 38 for the Mariners, and going 19-for-24 on clear
attempts. The Spartans also held a commanding edge on face-off
winning 21-of-29. Rick had a game-high 14 ground balls, while
MacDerment added 11 and was 18-for-23 in the face-off circle.
Kevin
Boucher (Gorham, ME) stopped 15 shots in between the pipes for
the Mariners, while David DeGhetto (Clifton, NJ) made 11 saves in
the win.
Castleton returns to action tomorrow afternoon when the Spartans
play host to University of Maine-Farmington at 2:00 p.m. in
conference action. Maine Maritime will travel to Green Mountain
College tomorrow afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. NAC face-off.
