Huskies Topple Mariners

Box Score

CASTINE, Maine – Senior attack Nate Prince (West Gardiner, Maine) scored five goals, including two of the game's first three to lead Southern Maine to a 13-6 win over Maine Maritime in men's lacrosse on Saturday. The Huskies' (2-1) starting attack combined for 10 goals and four assists to spoil the Mariners' home opener.

Prince wasted little time going to work, finishing a quick stick feed from linemate Ryan Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) 24 seconds into the game. The pair hooked up again 3:39 later, but not before Mark White (Oakville, Ont.) had worked himself open at the top of the box for a solid look at the net. Foley finished the game with three helpers and a pair of goals.

Maine Maritime shook off the opening salvo when a Brian Corain (Berwick, Maine) feed from behind the net made its way up to Nicholas Betti (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) at the corner of the box. Betti buried a blast in the top left corner with 1:07 in the first quarter, beating Huskies keeper Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine). Dussault turned away three Mariners' advances before Betti finally cashed in. The Huskies' junior stopped 15 shots in the game, including a pair of dandies late in the fourth quarter before the outcome had been settled.

Tom Houle (Manchester, N.H.) got Maine Maritime back within one, 3-2, finishing Andrew DiSalvo's (Glastonbury, Conn.) behind-the-net feed early in the second, but 61 seconds later, Southern Maine attack, Willie Joy (Portland, Maine) fired a hard shot from 10 yards out that got past Erik Milles (Bangor, Maine) for the first of his three on the day.

Joy netted the game-winner midway through the third, scoring seven seconds after Corain had made it a 6-4 game. Joy's goal was followed by a pair of daggers from Foley, making it a 9-4 game heading into the fourth.

DiSalvo struck for a pair to open the fourth quarter, getting his team back within three, 9-6, but a pair of Dussault saves followed by another Prince tally put the contest out of reach. Joy and Prince each found the net again as the Huskies tacked on three in the final 3:38.

Southern Maine was solid in transition, converting 23-of-26 clears, while their ride caused the Mariners to fail on nine of their 35 clear attempts. Foley presented problems for the Mariners breaking up four clears deep in MMA territory. Milles stopped six shots in absorbing the loss. The Huskies peppered him with 28 shots. The Mariners fired 42.

Southern Maine cashed in on 2-of-7 extra man opportunities, while Maine Maritime went 1-of-3 with the advantage. Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, Maine) was solid on the draw winning 13-of-22 faceoffs. He scooped the ground ball on his own faceoff win to set up Joy's momentum changer after Corain's goal.

Both teams showed moments of rust after extended breaks early in the schedule. The teams combined for 69 turnovers, many on errant passes on restarts.

Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday at Clark (Mass.). Southern Maine will host Husson next Sunday.
