Box Score CASTINE, Maine – Brian Gillis (N. Vancouver, B.C.) scored six goals to lead New England College to a 13-4 win over Maine Maritime in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's lacrosse at Ritchie Field on Saturday. The win was the first of the season for the 1-5 (1-0 NAC) Pilgrims, as well as their first-ever league win for the NAC newcomers. Maine Maritime fell to 0-4 (0-1 NAC).
Gillis did the bulk of his damage in the third quarter, scoring four of the Pilgrims' five goals in the period to break open a game that was within reach at the half at 5-1. He tacked on another pair early in the fourth quarter. Kevin Marceau (Concord, N.H.) scored unassisted from the right-hand side with 6:43 left in the second period for the eventual game-winner. It was his only marker on the day.
Sam Freihofner (Scarsdale, N.Y.) scored a pair and assisted on another, while Craig Kiernan (Connetquot, N.Y.) tallied twice. James Putney (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) recorded a goal and an assist, while Nick Acquaviva (Syracuse, N.Y.) stopped six shots for his first victory of the year.
Maine Maritime got the team's first hat trick of the season out of Brian Corain (Berwick, Maine). He netted a pair of third-quarter goals 24 seconds apart with help from Nicholas Betti (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and Andrew DiSalvo (Glastonbury, Conn.). Corain's final goal, with 3:37 left in the game, was the 50th of his career. The DiSalvo helper in the third quarter was the 90th of his career. Tom Houle (Manchester, N.H.) scored the Mariners' other goal.
The two teams combined for 58 shots divided equally amongst the sides. New England College scored three extra-man goals on eight attempts, while Maine Maritime was 0-for-5 with the extra man. New England owned a slight edge in ground balls, 41-35. Maine Maritime was better in both the clear and the ride, converting 15-of-19 transitions, while breaking nine of New England's 23 attempts.
Making his second start in lieu of the injured Erik Milles (Bangor, Maine), sophomore Gavin Cote (Arundel, Maine) denied three New England advances.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Sunday when the Mariners face Massachusetts Maritime at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. New England College hosts Southern Maine on Wednesday afternoon.
