Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime picked up its first win of the Adam Sherman era with a 17-0 whitewashing of Thomas College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) lacrosse on Saturday afternoon. Andrew DiSalvo (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored four goals and assisted on three more to power the victory, becoming just the third Mariner to reach the 100-goal plateau during the win.
The Mariners (1-5, 1-1 NAC) shutout of the Terriers (1-6, 0-1 NAC) marks Maine Maritime's first blanking of an opponent since a 4-0 win over Clark in April of 2002, and is just the third in the program's history.
DiSalvo scored three of Maine Maritime's first four goals, as the Mariners ripped open a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. MMA matched the squad's previous season high for goals in a game during the first 15 minutes of today's tilt. The senior attack scored his 100th 7:14 into the game when he rolled out from behind the cage and pegged the top right corner to complete his hat trick.
Already the career assist leader at MMA, DiSalvo finished with three helpers on the day. He needs five assists to become the first Mariner to dish out 100 goals in a career. He is four points shy of joining Christopher Keiley in the 200-point club.
DiSalvo worked with Bronson Guimond (Portland, Maine) in the second quarter to erase any doubt about the outcome. The pair conspired on three goals that showcased the Mariners' best ball movement of the season. The duo netted their first when Guimond punched in with 10:38 left in the second to make it 9-0. MMA scored twice more before the minute was out. After the draw, Nick Snelling (Colchester, Vt.) punched up his second of the day on a Tom Houle (Manchester, N.H.) feed from the X. The Mariners took the ensuing faceoff, got it to Guimond in the box who threw it across the crease for the DiSalvo dunk at 10:03 to make it 11-0.
Maine Maritime played downhill for the duration, owning 15 of the game's 21 faceoffs and securing a school-record 76 ground balls. The severely lopsided time of possession led to the Mariners peppering Thomas' keepers with 53 shots, compared to nine coming back the other way. Gavin Cote (Arundel, Maine) denied the only two on net to secure the shutout.
Nicholas Betti (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), Brian Corain (Berwick, Maine), and A.J. Larrabee (Farmington, Maine) each scored a pair for the Mainers, with Corain tacking on an assist. Houle had a pair of assists to go with a goal. DiSalvo scooped eight ground balls and caused three turnovers in the win.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Friday when the Mariners host Johnson State.
