Privateers Spoil Season Opener

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime (N.Y.) had eight different players find the net in an 8-4 win over Maine Maritime Sunday afternoon. The win was the Privateers' first of the season and improved their record to 1-2, while the Mariners open the season with a 0-1 mark.

James D'Amico led the Privateers with a goal and a pair of assists, while Mike Johnson, Charles Kuhn, Matthew Messina, and Kevin Winter each tallied a goal and an assist.  The Privateers' goalie, Nick Barbuto registered the first win of his career after stopping nine shots.

The Mariners' Andrew DiSalvo (Glastonbury, Conn.) opened the game's scoring three minutes in. The senior finished his afternoon with a pair of goals and an assist. The Privateers answered with a salvo by Winter, Messina and Kuhn before the end of the first quarter. MMA's Tom Houle (Manchester, N.H.) netted the only goal in the second quarter, taking his team into the locker room down 3-2.

The Privateers scored four unanswered in the second half to seize control of the contest. Mike Johnson and James D'Amico registered their goals in the third quarter. D'Amico's tally stood up as the game winner. Freshman accounted for the three fourth quarter goals for Maritime (N.Y.).

Maine Maritime got a pair of late goals with Brady Harrison (Alfred, Maine) scoring in his collegiate outing before DiSalvo added his second. Erik Milles (Bangor, Maine) was saddled with the loss. He recorded six saves on the day.

Maine Maritime is idle until St. Patrick's Day when the Mariners host Southern Maine in the Mariners' home open.
